5 steps to
writing training manuals the easy way
|
Say
hello to your serving men, what, where, when, why, how and who.
If you understand what they each need from you, you will have a
foolproof way of planning and creating your training manual.
Here are the 5 steps.
1. What do you need to say
Your first task is to decide what exactly it is you need to put
in
your training manual.
· How much information do you have to share?
· What's the best way to break that down?
· How small a chunk would work well?
· What are the step-by-step instructions that you need to
include?
2. How long have you got?
If you're writing a training manual with a number of sections you'll
need to decide how long you want the training to last and break this
down further.
· How long should the whole training take?
· Break this down into manageable days or sessions?
· How many sessions can you include?
· How much can you fit into each session?
· How long should each session last for maximum effect?
·
3. Who do you want to say it to?
Once you know your target audience it will help you to decide how best
to share information.
· Should it be broken down into talking/demonstration from the
trainer or teacher
· What skills need to be taught?
· Are there some areas where exercises would work best, or
discussion, group
work or rôle play?
· What type of learning exercise would be the best way to help
learners to
achieve more quickly?
4. What learning resources will you need to prepare?
When you have begun to break down the manual into sessions and then
skills you will be on the way to deciding how best to present
information.
· Will you need to prepare training notes or exercise sheets?
· What about handouts for the learners?
· Will some of the sessions need to use Powerpoint, video,
Smartboard or
cd/dvd? Build in time to prepare the necessary resources
· Perhaps you'll need to make up games or work cards
· You'll also need to think about preparing a training manual in
a house style
5. Who will deliver it?
Though this is included last it should be an ongoing part of your
preparations.
· You may need to create training notes so that the manual can
be used by other trainers in the future
· Include all the exercises and handouts for easy reference
· Keep everything together with evaluation forms and in-house
reference sheets
· You may need to have some introductory training sessions to
'train the trainer'
· Consider if your programme could be viable and valuable
outside of your organisation in a commercial market
These suggestions are only a starting point on what is a potentially
huge market. Training people in new skills is both a government
and human instinct.
In helping people to learn new skills you are fitting them for more
opportunities in life. Training, done the right way, sets people up to
achieve, and to expect.
Take time to plan your training manual before diving in and use all the
resources possible to share your skills and experience with others.
