Re: Stress free Craft Teaching

Dear Fellow Teacher and Crafter

Finding craft projects to use in the classroom can be difficult.  They usually require masses of preparation and are often written by those with no real understanding of what teachers need.

As a fellow craft teacher I know that you want clear instructions that give you all the facts.  That means 'do-able', workable projects straight from the page.

I know you don't want to spend your valuable time in trying out things that might not work.

What if I could show you how to run a course of glass painting projects,  and access all the written information you need whilst you're teaching?

Would you be willing to spend a few minutes now, reading how?

Your first step is to read this article in its entirety. Please don't miss a word because as I explain how to eliminate the stress from your craft teaching, I know you'll want the answers.

As a practising teacher (who's also an avid craft magazine and book fanatic) I'd long been disappointed by so-called craft projects written for teachers. I wanted to come up with a solution based on what I knew I wanted when teaching.

Frankly,  most instructions I'd tried didn't do the job.  They weren't clear and they didn't give me  what I wanted. They didn't seem to be presented in any way that would help me plan for further lessons.

To put it plainly: what was out there wasn't working, and that meant that I had to work harder.   It meant more time planning and preparing and learning new crafts.

I knew I could come up with a better solution that would not only help me,
but would help others.

And that's where the concept of this manual began.

I was working with Headway UK (the International Brain Injury unit), teaching glass painting to a group of individuals who attended their centre.

It was fun but tough, and whilst trying to find ways to help them to join in, I was also trying to find ways to help learners to pass their Open College Network qualification (Entry/Level1) in Practical Crafts.

When it was time to leave I realised that I needed to write teaching prompts that would help everyone to learn at their own pace.

So that's what I did.

I turned  hard-to-follow text instructions into step-by-step instructions, each with their own photograph. It helped those who learnt through text  AND those who learnt best through photographs.

To help the leaders at the Centre, who didn't know the subject I also included notes, projects and checklists!

They loved it, and you will too.

I was so convinced that the mix of instructions and information worked that I trialled the manual by visiting a local centre for physically disabled people.  I'd taught there over a number of terms, teaching a variety of activities and I was always impressed by their ability to make things work for them; whatever their personal difficulties.

I took along  my manual and asked them to 'review it' for me.  They didn't want to give their names but here's what they told me...

"...It's better than having a teacher because you can always put in a paperclip and stop"

"...you haven't got to keep up with the others"

"...it's really well laid out.  You would be able to work that without a teacher"

What they were telling me was that the manual made it easier for them to work independently, without having to ask for help!

I knew then that  the manual could help  people  in all sorts of places: those who love to learn crafts and those who share crafts.

In developing the idea I I started thinking of all the things teachers and learners might need when tackling new craft subjects....

Imagine having a craft teaching resource file
that includes 10 activities, session plans, notes, checklists and designs!

How would that help with planning?

The 10 projects that are included take you from easy peasy beginings through to more challenging projects.

Of course you don't have to start with the first project - you can start anywhere.  But the projects have been presented in a sequence so that each gets either  more challening, or introduces a new technique.

Here are the 10 projects.  Click on the links to view the finished project.

  1. Acetate and foil 3 fold card
  2. Tree decoration
  3. Free standing card
  4. Pocket card
  5. Ceramic tile
  6. Clip frame
  7. Granite vase
  8. Reverse penwork plate
  9. Lead edge circle
  10. Mirror tile
Click on the links to give you a photograph of the finished project.

As well as the project instructions you also get valuable session plans.

Most teachers hate writing session plans.  Well now you don't have to because this set of 10 glass painting projects comes with its own set of session plans.

The quick easy-to-read overview, gives you:

  • Aim of the session
  • Session objective
  • Method and project steps
  • Success Criteria: how to check the success of the session
  • Resources that you need to gather
  • Evaluation section
  • Notes
Click here to see a sample session plan.

I've also  included an overall scheme of work, or project overview  so that you can see how each project is built into a Glass Painting Programme.

 But that's not all!

I also know, (as a teacher) that some teachers prefer the simpler approach to session plans.  They don't need them, or want them.  What they do want though is a simple plan that gives brief details of the steps to be followed.

So as well as a session plan for each project, I've also included a project checklist.

I recommend that you use this as you sit with your learners to discuss the projects that they want to do .  This will let you decide on the best route through the projects, as going in order from 1-10, may not be best for all your learners.

Helping learners to talk about what they want to do is the key in classroom success.  You can see a sample project checklist here.

Now I know, as a teacher, how important it is check learning.

To help you with that I've included a number of individual and group progress charts including

  • 'Stepping stones sheets'
  • 'How was it for me?'
  • Individual progress charts
  • Group progress chart

As an added bonus I've also added a final section on designs for use with the individual projects.

But all this is really extra stuffing because the real core of the manual is the projects.

10 step-by-step glass painting projects
presented in two sections;
1.  the facilitator's set
and
2. the learner's photo sheet set

Having worked with lots of different groups, those with special needs, children, and the elderly I know that the needs of the teacher are very different from those of the learner.

Learners want to be in control, and to take charge of their own learning. For this to happen these  project instructions needed to be visual -  i.e in full glorious colour.

I knew it wasn't going to be easy or cheap, but I figured that it was worth a try.

So here's is the exciting part! You get 2 sets of instructions:
one for you and one for the learners.

And this is where things get really are different from the usual craft project.
Let's start with your set.

Your set has 10 separate glass painting projects.
Each A4 side is divided into separate individual text steps for faultless delivery.  Each step is accompanied with its own individual photograph in full colour.

So not only do you get the steps and sequences, but you get small photographic visuals to take you through the process.

It's a failproof system that means anyone can follow - and lead the session with confidence.

So even if you've never done the project the layout holds your hand and leads you through.

Easy peasy instructions that take you tiny step by tiny step through each project.  Take a look at a sample of the Acetate and foil project.  Take a look at our sample glass painting project.

And whilst your project may have 5 or 6 pages with maybe up to 8 steps and photos per page, your learners have a different layout.

Your learners set has a totally different layout. They get a minimum of text and only 6 photographs per page.

Their photo sheet sets are really the icing on the cake. Their own special instructions that mix photo and word.  Take a look at our sample photo sheet set.

A brilliant idea in great colour.

What does this mean for you - and your learners?

It means that any member of staff can use the manual to deliver the sessions.

You don't need to be an expert.  I've now made you the expert.

So it's like having a teacher on the page, taking you through everything by the hand.
The Craft Teacher is with you in the classroom!

And your learners, with their larger images can now follow their own instruction sets, And the projects can be used within the adult core curriculum (UK), as you map projects to the numeracy and literacy standards. This comes as a pdf bonus.

So let's recap on what you'll get.

Each manual comes in 6 sections.

  • A full Notes section with valuable, additional information to help you understand Glass painting
  • A set of 10 session plans - one for each Glass Painting project
  • 10 projects instructions sets in 10-by-step format, each step with an accompanying photograph

  • Feedback forms for the learners

With such a high degree of photo inclusions you'd expect this manual to be suitably expensive. Quality educational resources that work  ARE expensive.  Those that save you time and even more desirable.

Perhaps at £350 you'd think this too expensive, but think how expensive it would be NOT to buy into a resource that saves you time, money and energy.

What is it worth to have a resource that can be used by a wider number of teaching staff?
How expensive would it be to use another hour of your time planning, preparing and learning new crafts?
What price would you put on having access to all the information listed above?

At only £249 this timeless Glass Painting Manual comes to you in a 4 ring  binder, printed on gloss coated stock. A full 350 pages of information that will help you to put together a winning Glass Painting Programme.
